Downtown Tunnels

Description: DOWNTOWN. If you've got shopping in mind, you'll find that Downtown Houston features The Shops at Houston Center and a branch of Foley's department store. However, it also hides a wealth of businesses in tunnels beneath the city streets. Initially constructed in 1935 to link three theaters, the tunnels have been expanded to encompass more than six miles of territory and link approximately 82 buildings. The air-conditioned complex now offers dozens of shops and restaurants. Tours of the tunnels are available (713-222-9255).

Description: WEST HOUSTON. Bargain-hunters rejoice to find Harwin Drive and its eclectic, fashionable merchandise at discount prices. Costs are more than reasonable compared to other Houston shops that carry similar goods, and savvy folks come for premium fragrances, silver jewelry, Indian textiles and garments, leather goods, and knock-offs of designer luggage and purses. You won't find a cushy environment and lots of shopping perks in the area, but for the savings you'll discover, who cares?

Description: THE HEIGHTS. One of the city's top destinations for pursuing antiques, this street north of downtown Houston attracts lots of folks looking to accent their homes with something beautiful and time-tested. Numerous shops clustered in the area offer a variety of goods; if you think antiques are old hat, you can browse art galleries and home decor shops instead. Thankfully, a few cafes in the vicinity cater to folks on the search for new treasures.

Description: OLD TOWN SPRING. Whether you're in the mood for a quick day trip outside of the city limits or you're in the market for antiques and art, you'll want to make the drive to Old Town Spring. The turn-of-the-century community north of Houston offers tons of character and loads of merchandise in restored homes from the era. The pedestrian-friendly streets are full of shoppers wandering from locale to locale, and if you decide to stay over, you'll find B&Bs, wineries, and even a number of festivals that take place throughout the spring and fall.

Description: RICE VILLAGE. Spread across some fifteen blocks near Rice University, this long-lived shopping area is well-known for its eclectic shops and intriguing merchandise. Hundreds of retailers, restaurants, and bars suit all tastes, whether you're in the market for clothes, accessories, a bite to eat, or even just some people-watching. It's a great place to wander if you're not sure what you want but are hoping to have your imagination jogged. Large and small venues are both available.

Description: TOMBALL. You should be able to find all sorts of things you're looking for in this area, which was once known as Oil Town, USA ­ in 1933, liquid gold shot 100 feet in the air here. Now, the town offers some 49 shops selling a variety of merchandise, including antiques. Worth a trip just for the friendly, downhome hospitality.
